History and winetasting in Dobrogea

The region by the Black Sea, Dobrogea is among the few areas in the country where the wine has a special flavor, due to its particular terroir. Here ancient archaeological artefacts have been found, showing the importance of wine in the ancient cities of the region. Combining with important proofs of inhabiting since the Antiquity, here’s a complex destination the visitors could benefit.

We leave Bucharest in the morning and drive to East. First stop at Rasova winery – winetasting. Continue along the easy rolling hills of Doborgea to Constanta – the main city from the region and important harbor at the Black Sea. Lunch right next to the sea shore. After lunch – short walk and visit at National History and Archeology Museum for a brief look inside the history of Dobrogea. Leave Constanta in the afternoon and drive to Adamclisi. Here, the monumental building of the Mausoleum erected by the Romans about 2000 years ago dominates the landscapes. Return in Bucharest at evening.

Highlights:

• Crama Rasova – the new and modern cellar stands majestic in the steep hilltop of the right shore of Danube river. The symbol of the company, the sun shines longer here in Dobrogea than in any other part of the country. The wine company strives to produce wines of high quality that express elements of elegance, minerality and balance. The vineyard stretches over 50 hectares of young vineyards found in different stages of development. Modern technology and carefully wine making techniques are used in the aim of making consistently excellent wines. The winetasting comes in two offers: either 3 or 6 wines and cold cuts (cheese and salami).
• Constanta – The National History and Archeology Museum is the second largest of its kind from Romania, built in the Romanian architectural style at the beginning of the 20th century and served as the City Hall until 1921. It includes over 430,000 objects dating from the Paleolithic to the modern era, out of which the collections from Greek and Roman times are the most valuable. Outside we find the Roman Building with Mosaic, a unique historical monument in Eastern Europe due to its wealth of details and dimensions.
• Adamclisi –Tropaeum Traiani, or the Triumphal Monument erected probably in 109 AD to celebrate the victories in the two wars against the Dacians. Severe damaged in the next centuries, the monument was discovered by the archeologists in 1882 and reconstructed in 1977. Through its majestic size (39 m high and has a base diameter of 38 m), the monument overlook the area from far distance, even though the real triumphal ensemble was much larger.  On the outer walls 54 metopes depicts war scenes. Next to it is a funerary altar in which were engraved the names of 3800 Roman soldiers who fell in battle. There is also a mausoleum consisting of 3 concentric walls where the commander who decided the fate of the battle with his life was buried. At 2 km west of the monument, other relics of the past are still visible: the citadel (from 170 AD), the basilica, the necropolis, the citadel baths and the extramural dwellings.
