The hills and valleys of the Suceava River serve as the foundation for the city of Suceava, which is located in the northeastern region of Romania. The word "szucs" (pronounced "suci"), which means "peeler" in Hungarian, is where the town's name originates.

In the historical region of Bukovina, in northeastern Romania, at the border of Central and Eastern Europe, Suceava is the county seat and the main urban community. This moderately small town served as the Principality of Moldavia's capital from the late 14th century to the late 16th century.

Archaeological studies have shown that people have lived in Suceava's agricultural land and its surrounds since the Palaeolithic period. There was a settlement of free Dacians in the 2nd to third century, and archaeological discoveries also show significant Roman impacts.

The town is notably well-known for its impressively restored mediaeval seat fortification, known locally and nationally as Cetatea de Scaun a Sucevei.

Starting from Suceava, you can also visit the nearby monasteries, old places of ceremony that date back to the Middle Ages and were included in the UNESCO List of International Cultural Heritage in 1993 due to their uncommon and creative worth.

Some of these locations of worship include Putna Monastery, Voronet Monastery (famous for its blue), Sucevita Monastery, Moldovita Monastery, Gura Humorului Monastery (also well-known for its use of the rare and priceless colour red) and Arbore Monastery. The memorial houses are also worth visiting.
