Peles Castle is the most notable residence of the Romanian Royal family, one of the most beautiful castles in Eastern Europe. A testimony to the 19th century ruler's refinement, the wonderful edifice was built after the wish of Romania's first king, Carol I, and it happily mingled everything that was most beautiful and representative about the neo-Renaissance.
Located on Peles brook valley on the mountainside, on the spot named Pietrele Arse (the Burnt Stones), the Peles Castle was built between 1875 and 1883 – when it was officially opened, to serve as king's summer residence, invested with political, cultural and symbolic functions. In parallel with the Peles castle, the Knights' House, the Treasurer's House, the House of the Guard Corps, the Architects' House, the Garden House, and the Pelisor Castle, a gift given by King Carol I to the heir princes, were built nearby. Peles was the final resting place for several Romanian monarchs including King Carol I, who died here in 1914. After 1914, the Peles Castle continued to exercise its function of representation and museum, but without being inhabited, as the sovereign founder used to do.
