Papanași is a typical baked or fried pastry product from Romania and Moldova. Papanasi is a donut with another donut on top. The dough is created using a soft cheese such as cottage cheese, but ricotta and cottage cheese can be used.
There are several papanasi recipes including honey and almond, sprinkled sugar, paneer and more. The most popular variant, however, remains the classic: papanasi with cream and cherries, raspberries, or blackberry jam. Despite its basic appearance, papanasi skillfully manages to let you experience the mixture of flavors, while bringing them closer to traditional Romanian cuisine.
If you are worried about your weight, you should know that the two papanasi on the plate will contain more than 200 calories, especially if the dough is fried. However, just as healthy meals often create weight problems, a great treat once in a while does.
