Dragomirna Monastery

The Dragomirna Monastery is a mediaeval ecclesiastical location that attracts with its monastic life, the age and value of the construction, the beauty, the volume, and the originality of the architectural style. It is located 12 km north of the city of Suceava, near to the Dragomirna forest, in the village of Mitocu Dragomirnei. Metropolitan Anastasie Crimca of Moldova built the Fortified Monastery Complex known as Dragomirna Monastery in Romania between the years of 1602 and 1609 in the village of Mitocu Dragomirnei, commune of the same name.

In 1960, the Dragomirna monastery turned to a nunnery.

The Dragomirna Monastery is today maintained by 60 nuns who, in addition to their religious duties, also take care of the monastery's appearance. When tourists arrive, they are amazed by the place's beauty and feeling of calmness.

Located among the gentle hills of Bucovina, 12 km to the north of the former residence of Stephen the Great, the Dragomirna monastery rises between the fortress walls. Built as if to face the heights, in search of more light near the woods, shaded by a curtain of firs and majestically reflected in the water of the nearby lake, this place of worship, by its antiquity, by the originality of the style, by the elegance and solidity of the form , through its picturesqueness, arouses the admiration of every visitor, so that in front of it, the pious worshiper is as impressed as the historian or as the artist.

Beyond the beauty of the landscape, the unusualness of the place, what produces an unforgettable impression is the strange elegance of the monument with geometric rigors of great sophistication, with a unique silhouette due to its proportions and the unity of the volume, among all other medieval moldavian monuments.

Two significant European awards were obtained in May 2014 in Vienna for its restoration of the outstanding medieval frescoes.
