The Danube Delta (Delta Dunarii), included on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 1991, is one of Romania's main attractions, being the perfect destination for a getaway for nature lovers!
After passing through several countries and absorbing countless lesser waterways, the Danube empties into the Black Sea south of the Ukrainian border. On the Romanian coast, in Tulcea, the river splits into 3 separate channels (the Chilia, Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe arms) - a bird-filled labyrinth of lagoons, lakes and swamps, where life moves to nature's time.
The region shelters more than 1.200 varieties of plants, 300 species of birds and 160 fish species, being a real heaven for wildlife lovers, birdwatchers or fishers.
Here you can see a comprehensive list of all the birds found here!
A simple boat makes it possible to penetrate the heart of the delta, in a place where time seems suddenly suspended. The small community of inhabitants live in perfect harmony with the ecosystem, having many resources like: fishing, breeding and the harvest of the reeds. Once you get here, you have to taste the fish and seafood, particularly the traditional fish soup which is the best in Romania!
When to go?
Late spring and early autumn are the perfect time to observe migratory birds, and in the same time the weather is nice, with cool nights and warm days.
